Day trips and more: Barrington Community School has an extensive list of New England day trips, fall getaways and classes for all ages.

Registration is in progress for all summer and early fall offerings, among them an excursion to this summer’s exhibition at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, “El Greco to Velazquez: Art During the Reign of Philip III,” July 24.

In preparation for this exhibition, a pre-trip lecture on this period of Spanish art, with emphasis on the major artists of the time will be presented by art educator Helen Poor, July 17 from 10 a.m. to noon at St. John’s Church, 191 County Rd.

Bristol

Summer reading program performance: As part of the Rogers Free Library’s summer reading program, Catch the Reading Bug @ Your Library, Dave Marchetti will present “Animal Experiences,” tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. For children ages 4 and up, the program is a low-key adventure for children and adults.

The program will last about an hour followed by a hands-on session where audience members handle turtles, snakes, lizards, amphibians, an alligator and some small mammals. Registration is not required to attend. All are welcome. For more information, visit www.animalexperiencesbydave.com.

East Providence

Summer reading program: Children can pick up a reading log at any one of the four East Providence Library locations to record their summer reading and earn prizes and free passes to museums and other local fun spots. Preschoolers, who have someone read to them, can also participate.

Four lucky East Providence readers who complete eight hours of reading by Aug. 13 will each win four tickets to a Pawtucket Red Sox game and be entered to win a trip for four to Walt Disney World in Florida.

The summer program also includes performances for families and children ages 4 and up throughout the summer. Performances include Chris Carbone, magician, who will entertain today at 2 p.m. Also, Jackson Gillman, entertainer and storyteller, July 15 at 2 p.m.; Take Two Tandem Storytellers, with Anne-Marie Forer and Cindy Killavey, July 22 at 2 p.m.; and David Gracer “Entomophagy,” (eating insects), July 29 at 2 p.m.

Story times will be held on Thursdays at 10 a.m. from July 3 to 24. The program will be for ages 2 to 6 and include stories, songs, dancing and more, with a special presentation by Ronald McDonald, the “Sunsational Reading Show,” July 31 at 10 a.m.

A Reader’s Theater, for students in grades 3 to 6, will be held Thursdays from 2 to 3 p.m. July 3 to 31. Also, there will be a talent show for students in grades 4 to 6. Practice sessions will be Mondays at 10 a.m. in July, with dress rehearsal Aug. 5 at 6 p.m. Registration is required to participate. Forms are available at the Youth Services Department at Weaver Library, 41 Grove Ave. Reading Buddies, for ages 13 to adult, is a program that places volunteer readers with younger children to read together for one hour each week at the library.

Free concert: The Weaver Library, 41 Grove Ave., will present the new Chorus of East Providence in a free concert on the lawn of the library tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. This past March, the chorus made its debut before an audience of 500 people at the Martin Middle School. Under the direction of Beth Armstrong of Bristol, the 63 member group provides musical opportunities to East Bay residents. Those attending can bring lawn chairs and a picnic. Little Compton

Youth cookout, forum and concert: A cookout and forum, “Healthy Highs and Choosing Not to Use!,” will be held Friday at 5 p.m. under a tent set up behind the United Congregational Church, the Commons. Open to all students entering the seventh grade and up, this forum will explore the shaping and degree of youth use of alcohol and other drugs. Young people will be encouraged to find healthy ways to relax, “escape reality” or “get a rush.”

The forum will be presented by FCD, a nonprofit substance abuse organization. This event is a collaborative effort between the Little Compton Substance Abuse Prevention Task Force and the United Congregational Church Sunday School Program.

The first 10 young people who sign up to attend will be given a free ticket to a folk/roots concert being held in the church that night featuring Sara Lee Guthrie, her husband Johnny Irion and Toa Rodrigues-Seeger. Middletown

Family Night: Second Beach Family Night will be held Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. Featured will be a performance by Navy Band Northeast’s Rhode Island Sound. Other activities will include a moonwalk and slide, a balloon man, games and prizes. The concession stand will be open, grills will be available and lifeguards will be on duty. Admission is free.

Newport

History tours: Newport History Tours provide visitors and locals alike a way to learn about the city’s colonial heritage. Tours visit Newport’s Lower Thames Street, Washington Square, the Point and the Historic Hill. Topics include the Tastes of the Working Waterfront tour, Newport’s Buried History: Slavery and Freedom tour and the Rum & Revolution tour.

The full summer schedule runs through Sept. 1. Tours are about 1½ hours long. Tickets, which are $12 for adults and $8 for children ages 8 to 18, are sold at the Brick Market Museum & Shop, 127 Thames St. Tours all depart from the Brick Market Museum, except for Tastes of the Working Waterfront which leaves from the Newport Restoration Foundation Museum Store, 415 Thames St. For more information, visit www.newporthistorytours.org.

Reading Club: The Newport Library’s Adult Summer Reading Club will begin tomorrow. By signing up for the club, not only will readers receive a free gift, but chances to win more prizes over the summer.

To join, readers must be over 18 years of age and have a Newport Public Library or Ocean State Libraries card. Then, members must complete just one book (print or audio) between July 9 and Aug. 18 to become eligible to win gift certificates for free books from the Friends of the Library Bookstore. Members who finish five (or more) books or audio books in that same time period, you’ll be eligible to win either one $50 Gift Certificate or two $25 Gift Certificates from the Newport Chamber of Commerce, good at dozens of local stores and area attractions. Value added packages: Several attractions in Newport County have partnered to provide “value added” packages. Family and Children’s Nights Series: The Newport Recreation Department will kick off its Family Night Concert and Newport Children’s Night Series tonight with the John Moitoza Band. Other performers for the Family Night series include Abbey Rhode, Lois Vaughn, Larry Brown’s Swinglane, Avenue A, and Bandstand Revue.

The Children’s Night series will begin Thursday with singer Wayne From Maine. Vic and Sticks, Jay Mankita, Tommy James, The Toe Jam Puppet Band and T-Bone will also be part of the series.

Both the Family Night Concerts and the Children’s Nights are held at Easton’s Beach and are free to the public. All shows begin at 6 p.m.

Portsmouth

Campus tours: Members of the St. Philomena Elementary School admissions office will conduct tours of the school campus today through Friday. Prospective parents and students are invited to visit. Call 683-0268 to make an appointment. There are limited openings for September 2008 in Pre-kindergarten and grades 2, 3 and 7.

St. Philomena is a private Catholic school for children in pre-kindergarten through grade 8 at 324 Cory’s Lane.

Tiverton

Democrats to meet: The Tiverton Democratic Town Committee will meet Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Sakonnet Bay Manor, 1215 Main Rd. The meeting will include the gathering of signatures on nomination papers.

Concert: Four Corners Arts Center will present an evening concert of “Irving Berlin: The Voice of Everyman,” Saturday at 8 p.m. at The Meeting House, 3850 Main Rd. The concert will include with noted cabaret artists Bobbi Carrey and Will McMillan accompanied by Doug Hammer.
