Barrington
Pickups delayed: The Department of Public Works and Recycling Center will be closed Friday for Independence Day. Friday’s refuse and recycling will be collected Monday along with the regular Monday route. Refuse and recycling must always be curbside by 7:30 p.m.
Yard sale: Holy Angels Church, Maple Avenue, will hold a yard sale July 12 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Items may be dropped at the Presentation Center. Soda and hot dogs will be sold during the sale. For information, call 246-1562.
Bristol
Summer Reading Program performance: The Rogers Free Library’s Summer Reading Program, Catch the Reading Bug @ Your Library, will be held July 7 to Aug. 12, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon. The parade and grand finale event will be held Aug. 13, with participants forming at 10:15 a.m. in front of the library for the 10:30 a.m. parade. Mark Kohler and his companion, Flutter Buzz, will perform after the parade.
The reading program offers participants the chance to read for fun and win prizes. Every book read earns the reader a ticket for entry into the many prize drawings at the end of the program.
Program participants should have their library card ready to check out books and boys and girls, regardless of age, are welcome join on any morning from 9 a.m. to noon while the program is under way. There is no advance registration required. Participants start by taking out two or more books of their own choosing, reading them carefully and returning them to the library to show Queen Bee Brenda and her assistant bee, Miss Kasey. Participants should read at their own level, not below it. Advanced readers who read a book over 100 pages will receive extra prize drawing tickets. Preschoolers can join be being read to by any older reader.
Each week there will be a game and puzzle table and a craft table with new activities as well as performers.
Special contests during the program include the Junky Jitterbug contest where readers make a bug or a bug-like creature out of recyclables. Also, there will be a Fantastic Bugs in a Jug drawing contest, where readers pick up a template to draw their entry and a Wing, Stings or Wiggly Things photo contest where young photographers can bring in any size photo of something buggy to enter.
East Providence
Change in pickups: Due to the Independence Day holiday, all rubbish, yard waste and recyclables ordinarily picked up Friday will be collected on Saturday. Residents are asked to have their rubbish, yard waste and recyclable containers at curbside by 6 a.m. that day. Regular collections will resume on Monday.
Children’s theater performances: The East Providence Department of Parks & Recreation will sponsor performances by children’s entertainers this summer.
Daytime performances will be held at 10 a.m. on Pierce Field, 201 Mercer St. The schedule is as follows: Today, Jon Nelson, singer/entertainer; July 8, Jay “the Novelty Guy” Brunelle, music, magic & comedy; July 16, Jedlie’s Interactive Magic Circus; July 22, Lon Cerel, magician / balloon artist; July 31; Keith Munslow, singer/storyteller/cartoonist.
Evening performances will be held at 6 p.m. at Rose Larisa Park, at the end of Bullocks Point Avenue, across from the carousel. The schedule is as follows: June 27, the Toe Jam Puppet Band and Aug. 15, Keith Michael Johnson, comedy/variety show.

Trip to see Broadway musical: The East Providence Recreation Department is planning a Christmas trip for senior citizens to see the musical How the Grinch Stole Christmas Dec. 10 at the Wang Center in Boston. Reservations are now being taken by calling Deborah Rochford at City Hall, 435-7513.
Little Compton
Summer youth art programs: Parents in towns along the Sakonnet River or in “south coast” Massachusetts can enroll their children in summer art camps at two nearby locations — the Tiverton Four Corners Art Center and the Little Compton Community Center. These part-day camps are taught by instructors from the Newport Art Museum’s Coleman Center for Creative Studies.
Morning and afternoon camps in Little Compton and Tiverton run in weekly sessions beginning July 7 for children ages 6 to 13. Children explore a wide variety of creative themes and media. Costs range from $90 to $135 and Newport Art Museum members receive a discount. The Newport Art Museum offers dozens of summer camps, classes and workshops designed for people of all ages and artistic abilities.

Newport
Pickups delayed: The Newport Public Services Department’s Clean City Program reminds residents that there will be no trash, recycling and yard waste collection on Friday due to the Independence Day holiday. Friday’s collection will be delayed by one day and will be picked up on Saturday. Collections from Monday through Thursday will not be affected.
Summer Kids’ College: The Community College of Rhode Island will offer its Kids’ College at the Newport campus this summer. The program offers children age 8 to 12 hands-on enrichment programs taught by creative, caring professional teachers. Two weeklong sessions will be held July 14 to 18 and July 21 to 25. Children may register for one or both sessions.
A half-day program runs from 8:30 a.m. to noon. An optional Afternoon Adventure program will run from noon to 3 p.m. and will give children a chance to visit places such as Ballard Park, Newport’s only nature preserve; the Norman Bird Sanctuary; the Naval War College Museum; and the Newport Exploration Center aquarium.
Participants also can explore the universe at the Krupowicz Planetarium; tour the Newport Daily News and see a paper roll off the presses; and learn about boats, lighthouses and Narragansett Bay history during a Wickford Harbor adventure.
A variety of class choices are available from art courses to acting in plays and moviemaking as well as science-based programs, solving mysteries, learning the French culture, dancing and photo editing software.

Donate a racquet: The International Tennis Hall of Fame is accepting donations of usable tennis racquets to be distributed to youth groups and recreation programs throughout the summer. Since 1987, the International Tennis Hall of Fame has collected racquets and provided them to numerous youth programs, such as the Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis & Education group.
Usable racquets may be sent by mail or dropped off to the International Tennis Hall of Fame, 194 Bellevue Ave., Newport, 02840. Racquets should be donated prior to July 4.
Donors will receive two complimentary tickets to this year’s Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships Tournament, July 7 and 8. For information regarding the Donate a Racquet Program, call the Tournament Office, 849-6053.
PM Musical Picnics: The Newport Art Museum’s summer PM Musical Picnics will continue tomorrow with Abbey Rhode, a group that brings the Beatles to life with vintage instruments and authentic vocal arrangements.
PM Musical Picnics are held Wednesday evenings and offer children, parents, grandparents, couples and friends the chance to relax on blankets and lawn chairs and enjoy music and a light meal brought from home.
Admission is $5 each or $10 for families, children under age five are free. Admission is free for museum members. All concerts begin at 6:30 pm on the grounds of the museum’s historic Griswold House, weather permitting.
Yoga in the park: Friends of Ballard Park, the City of Newport’s Park Recreation & Tourism Department and SOMA Yoga will host yoga classes in Ballard Park Tuesdays at 6 p.m. this month. The 90-minute classes will be held in the Quarry Meadow of the 13-acre nature preserve which is most accessible at the Hazard Road entrance. Those planning to attend are asked to arrive 15 minutes before class time to allow time for parking and to make their way into the park. The fee is $10 per person. Drop ins are welcome. Reciprocal membership program: The Newport Art Museum was recently welcomed into the North American Reciprocal Membership Program or NARM. Newport Art Museum members at the patron level or above can now gain free admission and member discounts at over 200 museums in the United States and Canada.

Storytelling performance: The Take Two storytelling team of Anne-Marie Forer and Cindy Killavey will perform today at 10 a.m. at Portsmouth Free Public Library, East Main Road. The audience is welcome to participate in song and story during this “buggy” performance. The event, which is for children ages 4 to 12, is part of the library’s Summer Reading Program and is free to the public. For information, call the library’s Children’s Room, 683-9457.
Change of meeting date: The regular meeting of the Portsmouth Grange will not be held on Thursday as originally scheduled. Instead, there will be a cookout at the home of Scott Sherman on July 10 at 6 p.m.
Tiverton
Antiques show: Tiverton Four Corners will hold an antiques show Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at The Meeting House, 3850 Main Rd. Featured will be country accessories, garden and outdoor furniture, architectural, advertising, ephemera, tall case clocks and more. Free verbal evaluations of fine art and antiques will also be available between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Admission will be $7 per person, or $20 for early buyers from 7 to 9 a.m.
Monthly dinner: Amicable Congregational Church, 3726 Main Rd., will host its monthly dinner Saturday 5 at 6 p.m. This month’s menu includes hamburgers, hot dogs, tossed salad, potato chips, beverage and dessert.
