Benefit music festival: A daylong music festival to benefit Susan G. Komen For the Cure and the National Philanthropic Trust Project will be held Sunday from 2 to 8 p.m. at Glen Park, Glen Road (off Route 138), Portsmouth. Featured will be local musicians including Abbey Rhode, Sidewinder, Acid Reign, Julie Bisbano and David Cosimini. There will also be children’s activities, a raffle of goods and services donated by local merchants and free food. In addition, there will be a “wall of honor” to recognize those who have been lost to breast cancer and those who are fighting it.

Aquidneck Island Energy Conference: An island-wide energy symposium is slated for Sept. 20 at Salve Regina University. Spearheading the event are Salve Regina University, the Channing Memorial Unitarian Church and the Aquidneck Island Planning Commission. The group’s goal is to provide information about sustainable practices for energy conservation within the Newport, Middletown, Portsmouth and Naval Station Newport communities.
Topics under consideration include green energy productivity via a spectrum of wind power, solar energy, geothermal and tidal current electric generation. Before and after school childcare: The Bayside Family YMCA is now enrolling for its Out of School Time program. This program serves children from the Nayatt, Primrose, Sowams, Hampden Meadows, Oldham, and Waddington schools. The Out of School Time Program offers homework assistance, character development building, arts and humanities activities, sports activities, a healthy snack, and a safe atmosphere for your child, in most cases, at their school.
As a new component of the program this year, enrichment programs will be offered for a nominal fee. The before-school portion of the program runs from 7 to 8:30 a.m. and is only available at the Hampden Meadows School and the Waddington School.
The afterschool portion of the program runs from the time a child gets out of school until 6 p.m. Each site is staffed with a minimum of two staff and is licensed by the Rhode Island Department of Children, Youth and Families. Parking for Black Regiment commemoration: Parking for this weekend’s annual commemoration of the Black Regiment’s role in the Battle of Rhode Island has been changed from previous years. The primary parking lot will be across from the memorial, which is beside the northbound lanes of Route 114, just after the road divides from Route 24. The nearby industrial park will be used only for overflow parking. The Newport County NAACP will sponsor the commemoration on Sunday at 3 p.m. in Patriots Park. To reach the park and parking lot from southbound Route 114 or 24, motorists will have to turn around at Hedly Street in Portsmouth and travel north.
Barrington
Volunteer needed: The Town of Barrington is seeking a volunteer to serve on the committee for renewable energy for a term expiring November 2009. Resumé forms can be obtained through the Web site at www.barrington.ri.gov, at the Town Clerk’s Office at Town Hall or at the library. The deadline to submit a resumé is Sept. 2 at the town cerk’s office.
Bristol
Walking tours: The Bristol Historical & Preservation Society will hold its next walking tour today at 3:30 p.m. Led by Ray Battcher, the tour is titled “Hither and Yon” and will feature various sites in downtown Bristol. Tours, which are $5 for nonmembers and free to members, begin from the society’s headquarters, 48 Court St. For information, call 253-7223.
Anniversary of 1778 battle: The Bristol Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will host an anniversary event for the 1778 battle fought by the “black regiments” of Rhode Island on Aug. 29 at 2 p.m. at the Bristol Courthouse/Statehouse, 240 High St.
The guest speaker will be Carl Becker of the Second Rhode Island Regiment Re-enactors. Becker will appear in costume as an American officer during the Revolutionary War. He will display his hand-sewn regimental flags and share historical anecdotes of the First and Second black Rhode Island Regiments. Refreshments will be served. All are welcome to attend, reservations are not needed.
East Providence
Paranormal Realities: The Weaver Library, 41 Grove Ave., will present “Paranormal Realities with Keith and Sandra Johnson” Monday at 6:30 p.m.
Keith Johnson, founder of a paranormal research organization, New England Anomalies Research, will talk about his experiences as a paranormal investigator. His discussion includes information on topics such as orbs, apparitions, EVPs or electronic voice phenomena. The Johnsons host a local TV talk show, Ghosts R N.E.A.R.

Host families sought: Host families from East Providence and surrounding towns are being sought to house students from Segovia, Spain, for three weeks, from Sept. 6-27. Students will be participating in various activities and trips to area attractions including Boston and Harvard Square, Mystic, Conn., Providence and more. Students will be kept busy from start of school, Monday through Friday. Evenings and weekends are spent with the host family.
Any family, large or small, with high school-age children can be a host family. Homeschool families are also welcome to participate. The host family provides a bed and meals and allows the visitor to participate in its usual activities.

Newport
Grant received: Island Moving Company’s site-specific dance and art festival, Open for Dancing, has received a grant from Meet the Composer/New England to support the participation in the festival of pianist John Davis, who will collaborate with choreographer Andrea Haenggi on a dance created for “Reject Beach” on Ocean Drive.
Davis will work with Haenggi and festival participants on the score and live performance of the work, which will be created over three days and performed Sept. 20 and 21. The work will be one of three site performances presented at the festival this year — the others are Fort Adams and Ballard Park.
During the three days of rehearsal, participants in the dance will witness and contribute to the creation of a new work and the public will be able to join in at open rehearsals, lunch with the artists on the porch of the Newport Art Museum each day and at the panel discussion with all the Open for Dancing artists on Sept. 19. Classic Yacht Regatta: The 29th annual Classic Yacht Regatta hosted by the Museum of Yachting will be held Aug. 29-31. The event includes two days of racing and the regatta’s traditional classic yacht parade. For information visit www.museumofyachting.org or call 847-1018.
Audio tour: The International Tennis Hall of Fame & Museum, 194 Bellevue Ave., has developed and implemented an audio tour component for visitors. The tour presents 20 stops within the museum interpreting various gallery exhibits and collection items.
The system uses a hand held “wand” that delivers the recorded information to museum-goers at various volume levels. This tour was made possible by donations Rosalind P. Walter and John and Hope Reese. Museum hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children 16 and under, $8 for senior citizens, members of the military and students with ID or $25 for a family.
