Barrington teen fined $500 for substance abuse
01:00 AM EDT on Thursday, October 9, 2008
BARRINGTON — Benjamin W. Geldmaker, sentenced two previous times in District Court for underage possession of alcohol, was given another $500 fine and set free following a third offense yesterday.
The 19-year-old, who has admitted buying alcohol that may have played a role in last November’s car crash that killed Barrington teen Jonathan Converse, also had his license suspended for 60 days and was ordered to perform 25 hours of community service.
He was also ordered to undergo substance-abuse counseling. Again.
His lawyer said there may be an appeal, even though Geldmaker pleaded no contest yesterday morning.
Invited to address the court, the teen declined.
On June 18 last year, Geldmaker, of 128 Maple Ave., was ordered to pay $150 plus court costs for underage alcohol possession.
Six months later he was accused of going to Douglas Liquor in East Providence on Nov. 5 and using fake identification to buy a 30-pack of beer. He gave about six cans to a 17-year-old acquaintance, also from Barrington, who took it to an informal party involving several local youths.
(Four of those teenagers got into a car later that evening and the drunken driver, Michael J. Silveira, then 16, ended up slamming into a tree, killing Converse, also 16. Silveira was ordered to serve a two-year sentence at the state Training School.)
Geldmaker was fined $500 and ordered to undergo substance-abuse treatment.
Then, on April 19, Geldmaker was found at Brickyard Pond with liquor and a bunch of friends.
One of those friends turned out to be Ryan Greenberg, who was free while awaiting trial in connection with the alcohol-related death last year of Patrick Murphy. That encounter sent Greenberg to the ACI for two months. He is now in home confinement, awaiting trial for second-degree murder.
