Barrington marina expansion before coastal council
01:00 AM EDT on Wednesday, August 20, 2008
BARRINGTON — A controversial proposal to expand the Cove Haven Marina, 101 Narragansett Ave., will come before the Coastal Resources Management Council at its regular meeting Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Providence.
The session will be held in the boardroom of the Narragansett Bay Commission, 1 Service Rd., at the end of Ernest Street.
The issue has been before the Town Council repeatedly.
Cove Haven Corp. initially received the blessing of the council on March 3, but the council later backed off when residents discovered the scope of the project and objected. The residents said they weren’t notified of the proposal.
The marina wants to relocate its docks, expand its perimeter limit and extend the property line to within 10 feet of Allen Avenue, which is owned by the town. The minimum setback is 25 feet. (The proposal comes after the marina bought a house on Allen Avenue with 48 feet of waterfront.)
Critics have said the proposal will affect residents’ views of the water and interfere with public access to the water in an area where neighborhood children have played for years.
The residents initially took their complaints to the CRMC, which sent the matter back to the town.
The Harbor Commission and Planning Boards, which had initially voiced no objection to the proposal, subsequently reversed themselves after hearing the concerns of the neighbors.
After the council received a petition from about 100 residents who objected to the plan, members voted unanimously on June 2 to object to the proposal as well.
