Barrington again vexed by car break-ins

BARRINGTON — The town has been struck by another rash of car break-ins.

One or more thieves broke into 13 vehicles in two different parts of town late Saturday night or early Sunday morning.

One group of breaks was at Anchorage Way, where at least five vehicles were entered overnight. At 22 Anchorage, thieves got away with a wallet, an iPod, and about $60 cash. At 27 Anchorage, where two cars were broken into, an iPod adapter and a cell phone were lost.

The other group of incidents included cars parked overnight at 8 Ridgeland Rd., where a navigational system was stolen, at 3 Ferncliff Rad., where the car sustained damage but there was no apparent entry, and at 16 Broadview Drive, where a wallet, credit cards and about $140 were taken.

Earlier this year, the town was plagued by another series of break-ins, often involving cars where something valuable had been left in plain view in the passenger compartment. In most cases, the vehicle was unlocked or a window was quietly broken. The thief seemed to be only interested in cash, often leaving personal belongings strewn across a neighbor’s yard.

The incidents seemed to stop after the May arrest of Adam Medeiros, 35, of 450 Providence St., West Warwick. He was nabbed in the early morning hours after a neighbor witnessed a car break-in on Chapin Road, phoned a description of the thief to the police, and Patrolman Timothy Oser, after spotting Medeiros, chased him through some backyards before tackling him.

Medeiros, who had previous misdemeanor convictions for disorderly conduct, marijuana possession and malicious destruction of property, was given a suspended six-month sentence and six months probation by District Court Magistrate Christine S. Jabour of Barrington after he pleaded no contest to a charge of tampering with a motor vehicle.
