SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS: Citizens’ Scholarship Foundation (CSF) of Barrington has announced that applications for scholarships for the 2009-2010 college year are available online at www.Barringtonhigh.org/guidance. Barrington residents currently in their senior year of high school or freshman and sophomores in college can access and download the application from home or school. Applications will also be available at the Barrington High School guidance office.
Applicants must return hard copies of the completed application to the Barrington High School guidance office by March 5. Contact csf-barrington@mail.com with any questions.
As part of its 50th anniversary celebration and in honor of the organization’s long-standing contribution to the students of Barrington, CSF will award a special 50th anniversary scholarship in June, one of many special events planned to celebrate the town’s 50 years of scholarship support.
Barrington High School alumni also are working to expand the CSF endowment by raising funds to create scholarships in their class’ name. The BHS Class of 1962 began its scholarship drive with money remaining from its reunion fees, and in just two years raised $5,000 to fund an endowed scholarship specifically honoring its class. The Class of 1963 is also well underway in its efforts to fund an endowed scholarship. CSF would like to invite other alumni classes to create scholarships.
The first CSF scholarship funds were raised by students when members of the Barrington High School student council and the newly formed Honors Group donated $1 each to join CSF in 1959 then used the $48 to print donor cards for a student-led, door-to-door canvas of the town. That year they raised $2,450 and began the rich tradition of community supported scholarships in Barrington and Rhode Island.
The Citizens’ Scholarship Foundation of Barrington, a chapter of Dollars for Scholars, provides scholarships to defray tuition and other costs for students in the first three years of college. Scholarship funds come from named endowments, one-time designated grants, grants from civic and community organizations, and income from the CSF endowment.

ADVENT SERIES: This Christmas season, Barrington Presbyterian Church’s pastor Patrick W. Notley, will offer “A Look at the Birth Narratives in the Gospels,” a weekly Advent series of three study classes. The Rev. The sessions, to be held Thursdays at 7 p.m., will examine the birth of Jesus as presented in the canonical gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The first meeting, Dec. 4, will feature the appropriate passages of the gospels of Mark and Matthew; Dec. 11, Rev. Notley will talk about the narrative as presented by Luke; and Dec. 18, the series concludes with a discussion of the story as it appears in the gospel of John.
The meetings are free and the public is welcome. Barrington Presbyterian is at 400 County Road in Barrington. The church parking lot is at the rear of the building. For information, call (401) 245-2218.
