Henderson's efforts earning him points

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- There is no guaranteeing that
Rickey Henderson
will earn spot on the Red Sox roster, but he has been impressive this spring.
The 43-year-old outfielder served as the designated hitter in yesterday's 4-2 exhibition victory over Atlanta, batting third. He reached base on an infield single to deep short in his first at-bat, and also walked and was thrown out stealing.
Henderson conducted a baserunning and base-stealing clinic for about a dozen players over a week ago at the minor-league complex. Henderson also talked about using baserunning to help the team win. The 24-year veteran, who could be used as an extra outfielder, pinch-runner and pinch-hitter, also has been a positive influence on the bench.
Sanchez starts at short
Rey Sanchez
got the start at shortstop yesterday in place of
Nomar Garciaparra,
who is playing every other day for now to make sure his surgically repaired right wrist is healthy. Sanchez has been told there's a spot on the team for someone to back up Garciaparra, as well as an opening at second base. Sanchez started Monday's game at second. Yesterday, he went 0-for-2, but had an RBI.
Around the bases
Rolando Arrojo
was stretched out to three innings yesterday. In the event the Sox have trouble settling on a fifth starter, with
Darren Oliver
and
Frank Castillo
the likely candidates for now, Arrojo could be pulled from the bullpen to take over that role. Arrojo gave up one hit and no runs in a sparkling outing . . .
Carlos Baerga
had two more hits, giving him a team-leading five hits this spring. Baerga, who started at second base, scored a pair of runs . . .
Johnny Damon
swiped his second base and knocked in his fifth run, tops on the team . . .
Willie Banks surrendered a pair of unearned runs in the eighth, but closed the door in the ninth . . .
Edgard Clemente
had a double.
Andrews gets the call
The Sox added veteran corner infielder
Shane Andrews
to camp, bringing him up from the minors, to help fill a hole at first caused by injuries to first basemen
Juan Diaz
(right shoulder) and
Calvin Pickering
(right quadriceps). Pickering was to have an MRI . . . Right-hander
Jamie Brewington
has been slowed by a strained right latissimus (lower back) muscle.
Let's make a deal
The Red Sox announced that Diaz, Pickering,
Shea Hillenbrand, Lou Merloni, Juan Pena, Sunny Kim, Angel Santos, Dernell Stenson, Wilton Veras, Jorge DeLaRosa, Josh Hancock, Paxton Crawford
and
Anastacio Martinez
have agreed to contracts for 2002.
Casey Fossum
's contract status still was up in the air.
