Catching up with . . . Barton Farm
WARWICK
-- Mayor Scott Avedisian proposed, and the City Council agreed, to buy Barton Farm this year.
That prevented private developers from building houses and perhaps commercial buildings on the city's last remaining dairy farm, off Route 117 near the West Warwick line.
Now the question is, what does the city do with 67 acres of farmland?
The Warwick Land Trust will make recommendations in its management plan for the property, now being written.
Some neighborhood interests want to set up a foundation to run the farm as a "living history" exhibit, while other city residents see it being developed for recreation.
Avedisian said he would like to "leave the farm as it is," as undeveloped open space, after selling off its two houses, a historic 220-year-old farmhouse and one built about 40 years ago.
