Orientation scheduled
for recycling program
PROVIDENCE
-- Groundwork Providence/Keep Providence Beautiful will have an orientation meeting Monday for residents interested in assisting with the expanded trash recycling program that begins in mid-April.
A "neighborhood recycling captain" will be chosen from each of the city's 25 neighborhoods to work with residents to overcome any obstacles in making the effort a success.
The city will be the 23rd community in the state to participate in the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation's "maximum recycling program," which expands the types of items eligible for recycling.
With about 8.5 percent of household waste being recycled, Providence has the lowest rate of recycling of any community with which the Resource Recovery Corporation deals. The highest is Barrington at 27.5 percent.
Residents will get new recycling bins in March; the expanded recycling program begins April 16.
The meeting for prospective recycling captains is at 6:30 p.m. in the Barnard Room of the main Providence Public Library, 225 Washington St.
Those interested in participating may call Groundwork in advance at 351-6440 or just come to the meeting.

Federal Hill man
sentenced in rape
PROVIDENCE
-- A Federal Hill man has been sentenced to 25 years at the Adult Correctional Institutions for raping a 14-year-old girl who accepted a ride from him thinking he knew her sister.
Juan Martinez, 35, of 165 Knight St., was convicted of the assault Nov. 7. But that day, while on bail, he failed to return from a court recess, and Superior Court Judge Vincent A. Ragosta issued an arrest warrant. He was arrested by state police Nov. 13.
The attorney general's office said that evidence was presented during the trial that Martinez picked up the girl Aug. 5, 1998, after she had been dropped off on Calder Street in the West End by her sister and others who had been driving around.
Martinez assaulted the girl in a Johnston motel. He later told the police that she was his 18-year-old girlfriend.
Martinez was given a 40-year sentence, with 15 of those years as probation.
