W. Warwick man, 19, charged
with molestation, sex assault
SOUTH KINGSTOWN
-- Michael P. Parenteau, 19, of 49 Border St., West Warwick, was arraigned in District Court yesterday on one count of second-degree child molestation and one count of second-degree sexual assault.
In accordance with normal court procedure, he did not enter a plea. A grand jury will now consider the charges, both of which are felonies.
State law defines second-degree child molestation as sexual contact with a person 14 years old or younger. According to the charges brought by state police from the Hope Valley barracks, Parenteau's second-degree sexual-assault charge involves alleged sexual contact by force and coercion.
Cpl. Bob Mackisey said yesterday that the incidents prompting the charges involved one alleged victim, whose age changed between the first and the second incident. According to the charges, the offenses took place between December 1999 and November 2000.
Judge Robert J. Rahill ordered Parenteau held on $25,000 surety bail, meaning he must pay $2,500 to be released. He had not posted bail as of yesterday afternoon.
