The doctor will see you now
By VAUGHN WATSON
Journal Pop Music Writer

Who he is: Scott Allen

What he plays: The Rhode Island singer-songwriter plays upbeat songs in a folk-rock style.

Influences: Phil Ochs, John Hiatt, Bob Dylan and the Beatles.

History: Allen started playing guitar and writing songs in 1980. He was living in a Cambodian refugee camp, doing relief work and settlement work, and picked up the guitar because the instrument he had previously played -- the piano -- was not readily available.

Recording: Allen has a CD in the works. He has uploaded several songs to www.milomusic.com

"I started the Web site a little over a year ago," Allen says. "It is an outlet for myself and other local songwriters, to put their stuff out on the Net in a way that we had a little more control. This is a site in which we can control how the music is presented."

The Web site gets about 1,000 visits a month. A fun feature allows listeners to give the artists feedback.

In his spare time: Allen works as an internal medicine physician. Finding time for music has always been a challenge, he says.

"It's such an important part of my life and an important release. It's just like anything else, you have to budget some time for it."
