RockToad: 'We really listen to everybody'
By VAUGHN WATSON
Journal Pop Music Writer
Band:
RockToad
Who they are
(left to right)
:
John Waddington, lead guitar; Brian McDonnell, drums (obscured); Steve Donne, bass; Tim Wells, guitar.
What they play:
The band sounds at ease -- and sounds as though it is having fun -- playing a wide range groove-driven laid-back pop songs.
Flight of the Congressmen
opens with Donne's slow-rolling bossa nova bass rhythm, then in comes Wells's and Waddington's pesky playing. McDonnell breaks the tension with a cluster of drumming, then sends the song back to Donne to hunt down the groove again.
History:
The band formed 12 years ago as a three-piece. Waddington joined about two years ago. Wells, McDonnell and Donne are friends from the North Kingstown area who've played music together since they were about 15 years old.
"We all work. We do this because we really like it," Wells said. "We enjoy it, and have a good time."
Influences:
"Pretty much everything," Wells says. "From Frank Zappa to Chet Atkins. We really listen to everybody."
About two years ago the band opened a gig at the Station in West Warwick for Mike Keneally and Beer for Dolphins. Keneally is a former Frank Zappa guitarist. "That was really cool," Wells says.
Recording:
The band has released a self-titled debut CD, recorded at Triad Studios in Warwick.
