Catching up with . . . Sonny the miniature horse
CRANSTON
-- Sonny the horse is still not allowed home, but he's back on his home street.
And now he has two girlfriends for company.
The miniature show horse, the subject of a property-rights court trial this summer, is staying in a renovated barn at the end of Crest Drive. That's about three-tenths of a mile from 100 Crest Drive, the Ridgewood Estates home of his owners, David and Kathy Mignacca.
Fred Lawton, a neighbor, offered the Mignaccas the use of his barn.
The Mignaccas have since acquired two more miniature horses: Mariah and Lady. Kathy Mignacca said the family is happy with the arrangement and that her son, Christian, who is training to show Sonny in equestrian competitions, last month was honored by the New England Miniature Horse Society.
The Mignaccas got Sonny in April and kept the miniature horse on their own property.
Neighbors won a court order in May to have the horse removed, based on deed restrictions. In July, after a trial, Superior Court Judge Stephen A. Fortunato ruled that Sonny could stay at the Mignaccas' home. The neighbors appealed, and the state Supreme Court in September ordered Sonny off the land while the appeal is pending.
