Homeless sleep-out

The youth group, together with the Board of Missions, at Four Corners Community Chapel in Cumberland, will hold a sleep-out to draw attention to the plight of the homeless. This event will take place on the front lawn of the chapel, 200 Angell Rd., beginning at dusk tonight, and will conclude at tomorrow’s worship services at 10 a.m.The youth group is asking that people come by the chapel on the night of the sleep-out to drop off items to be included in emergency backpacks, which will be given to various homeless shelters. Items needed include winter hats, gloves, mittens, scarves, warm socks, baby wipes, lip balm, soap, shampoo, disposable razors, hard candies, deodorant, combs, toothpaste, toothbrushes, pencils, small note books, and fast food coupons.

Lessons and Carols

The Music Ministry at Immaculate Conception Church, Oaklawn Avenue, Cranston, will present an evening of Lessons and Carols tomorrow at 7 p.m. There will be 60 people involved in this reflective meditation on the Advent season, including choir members, bell ringers and readers. The music program will include selections by Ralph Vaughn Williams, Giovanni Peirluigi Palestrina, Jean Berger and Grayston Ives.

Peace Pastoral anniversary

Pax Christi RI will sponsor a conference to mark the 25th anniversary of the Bishops’ Peace Pastoral on Wednesdayfrom 7 to 9 p.m. at St. Anthony Church, 1413 Mineral Spring Ave., North Providence. Registration begins at 6:45 p.m.

Bishop Walter F. Sullivan, former president of Pax Christi USA, will deliver a speech entitled “The Challenge of Peace Making in the Church Today.”

Authors to sign

Camille Lewis Brown, author of the book African Saints, African Stories: 40 Holy Men and Women, and Philip F. Lawler, editor of the Catholic World News and author of The Faithful Departed, about the impact of the sexual abuse crisis on parishes in Boston, will be on hand to sign books at the Holy Name of Jesus Church bazaar next Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the former Holy Name School, 55 Locust St., Providence.

Readings and songs, in Latin

The First Baptist Church in America and The Department of Classics at Brown University will present its annual program of readings and songs in the spirit of the season, conducted entirely in Latin, on Monday, Dec. 8, from 8 to 9:15 p.m. at the church, 75 North Main St., Providence. English translations are provided. Admission is free. All are welcome. For information, call Brown at (401) 863-2123.
