For Orthodox Christians, Monday marks the Beginning of the New Ecclesiastical Year, a celebration that will begin Sunday night. On or about Sunday, depending on the sighting of the new moon, Muslims will begin their month-long observance of Ramadan. It is a time of fasting when all adult and physically able Muslims are required to abstain from food, drink and sexual relations from dawn to sunset for the entire month.
Monday is also Labor Day in celebration of all those who work. Some Catholic parishes use the occasion to celebrate the feast of St. Joseph the Worker.
On Wednesday, followers of Jainism end their eight-day Paryusana Festival. Members of the Jain Digamber sect begin a similar 10-day celebration, the Das Laxana Festival. For Hindus, Wednesday is Ganesh Chaturthi, a celebration of the birth of Ganesh, seen as a remover of obstacles and bringer of luck.
