Starting at sundown today, Orthodox Christians celebrate Prophet Elias Day, marking the day when it is believed that Elias, or Elijah, the most revered Hebrew prophet for Eastern Christians, ascended into the heavens on a chariot of fire.
On Thursday, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints celebrate Pioneer Day, marking the anniversary of the entry of Mormon pioneers into the Valley of the Great Salt Lake after their historic trek across 1,300 miles of wilderness in 1847.
On Friday, Anglicans and Roman Catholics celebrate the feast of St. James the Apostle, in honor of one of Jesus’ first apostles. A brother of John, he was martyred by Herod Agrippa in the year 44.
