World Youth Day
The United States will send 15,000 young people to World Youth Day, the international event convened by Pope Benedict XVI, scheduled to take place in Sydney, Australia, beginning Tuesday and continuing through Sunday, July 20.
The young pilgrims will be joined by 50 U.S. bishops, including Cardinal Francis George, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.
Author will speak
Priscilla Warner, co-author of the The Faith Club: A Muslim, a Christian, a Jew — Three Women Search for Understanding, will speak at Central Baptist Church, 99 Narragansett Ave., Jamestown, Thursday at 7 p.m.
Warner, a Rhode Island native, will share the story of how the three women worked to understand one another’s faith in the wake of Sept. 11, 2001. The discussion is free and open to the public. For more information, call (401) 423-1651 or e-mail cbc.jamestown@cox.net.
String quartet performance
A string quartet from the 2008 Kingston Chamber Music Festival will perform Haydn’s Seven “Last Words of Christ” at the Church of the Epiphany, 1336 Pawtucket Ave., East Providence, Monday, July 28, at 11 a.m. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased at the church or at the door.

Tribute to Father Iwuc
The Polish Roman Catholic Union of America, celebrating its 135th anniversary this year, paid tribute to its national vice chaplain, the Rev. Canon Anthony D. Iwuc, at the last quarterly meeting of the officers and board of directors at the national headquarters in Chicago on June 21. The PRCUA is celebrating its 135th anniversary this year.
Father Iwuc is pastor emeritus of St. Joseph Parish, Central Falls. Since his retirement on July 1, 2005, Father Iwuc has lived at the St. John Vianney Residence in Providence, offering his assistance primarily to the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary in North Providence, St. Ann Parish and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish in Providence and the Forand Manor in Central Falls.
Open house
St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Putnam Pike, Greenville, will hold an open house after the 9 a.m. service on Sunday July 20. Refreshments will be served.
