Tomorrow is the feast of Pentecost for both Catholics and Protestants. It celebrates the day when, according to the scriptures, the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles in the form of tongues of fire, allowing them to preach and teach to the crowds each in their own native tongue. It is sometimes called the birthday of the church because it was reported that 3,000 people were reported to be converted in that first day. The feast is celebrated 10 days after the commemoration of Jesus’ ascension to heaven, and is also referred to by Anglicans as Whitsunday.
