Ordination today at St. Peter’s
The Most Rev. Thomas J. Tobin, bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Providence, will preside at the diaconate ordination of seminarian Andrew Messina today at 10 a.m. in St. Peter Church in Warwick.
Sacred music performances
Sine Nomine will present “A Collage Mass of Sacred Music,” featuring works by Machaut, Josquin, Ockgehem, Stravinsky and others today at 7:30 p.m. at St. Columba’s Chapel, 55 Vaucluse Ave., Middletown, and Sunday at 3 p.m. St. Lawrence Martyr Church, 110 Summer St., New Bedford. Tickets are $12 and $10 for senior citizens and students.
Latin Mass at St. Leo’s
St. Leo the Great Church in Pawtucket will offer the traditional Latin Mass tomorrow at 5 p.m.
Communications collection
The U.S. Catholic bishops have designated tomorrow as the national date for the Collection for the Catholic Communication Campaign to coincide with World Communications Day. The collection will take place in parishes across the country this weekend.
Pope Benedict XVI has chosen “The Media: At the Crossroads between Self-Promotion and Service — Searching for the Truth in Order to Share it with Others” as this year’s theme of World Communications Day.
Half of the donations to the collection remain in the diocese to fund local communications projects such as televised Masses for the homebound, diocesan newspapers and Web sites. The other half provides funds for national projects.
Answering faith questions
The Rev. Kris Von Maluski, assistant pastor of St. Francis de Sales Church in North Kingstown, will discuss “Apologetics 101: Answering Common Objections to the Faith from Scripture and Tradition” in the final Theology on Tap session of the season Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Uno Chicago Grill, 371 Putnam Pike, Smithfield.
Methodists praised for rejecting divestment
Christians for Fair Witness on the Middle East applaud the United Methodist Church for rejecting divestment from companies doing business with the state of Israel. Five annual U.S. Methodist conferences and one independent Methodist organization
(Methodist Federation for Social Action) submitted divestment petitions for consideration at the United Methodist General Conference which took place in Fort Worth April 23 through May 2.
Ex-ambassador Ross to speak
Former ambassador Dennis Ross, U.S. Middle East envoy, will speak at Temple Beth-El, 70 Orchard Ave., Providence, on Tuesday, May 27, at 8 p.m.
Author of The Missing Peace — The Inside Story of the Fight for Middle East Peace, Ross is currently a counselor and Ziegler distinguished fellow of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. He is also the first chairman of a new Jerusalem-based think tank, the Institute for Jewish People Policy Planning, funded and founded by the Jewish Agency for Israel.
