No big Red Sox deals on horizon

BOSTON — The New York Yankees made a deal last Friday and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim made theirs yesterday.
The Red Sox generally don’t feel pressured into making deals to match ones made by the competition. That’s good, because if the Red Sox hope to make an impact move before tomorrow’s 4 p.m. non-waiver trading deadline, things will have change in a hurry. As of late last night, there seemed little on the horizon.
A look at where talks stand:
•The Sox had hoped that a team would emerge in the Manny Ramirez Sweepstakes, but to date, that hasn’t happened.
There were reports last night that Florida — whose entire payroll is barely higher than Ramirez’s base salary for this season — showed interest yesterday. The Marlins, of course, would only be interested if the Sox took care of the remainder of Ramirez’s money for this season (approximately $7 million). Ramirez, who lives in south Florida in the offseason, would surely approve, but the Marlins don’t seem to represent a good fit for the Sox.
•The Sox continue to be in the hunt for bullpen help, but there’s a long line of potential suitors for the relievers available.
Kansas City’s Ron Mahay, Atlanta’s Will Ohman and the Cubs’ Scott Eyre — left-handers all — remain on the Sox’ radar, but it’s likely that those talks will go right down to tomorrow’s 4 p.m. deadline.
Reports linking the Sox to two Houston Astros relievers — veteran Doug Brocail and Geoff Geary — are seemingly without merit. An Astros official said yesterday that his team had had no discussions for pitching with the Red Sox.
•Boston’s search for a young catcher will probably not be addressed by tomorrow’s deadline. Deals for young players with little or no service time are more likely to be consummated in the offseason. Even if the Sox were to land a catcher before the deadline, he wouldn’t play ahead of Jason Varitek down the stretch.
Texas remains the most logical trading partner, as the Rangers are one of the few teams with an abundance of catching help.
Significantly, however, all three of the Rangers prospects have question marks. Max Ramirez will hit, but some wonder whether he’ll ever be a quality receiver. Taylor Teagarden has experienced throwing problems after Tommy John surgery and Jarrod Saltalamacchia’s stock has dipped considerably in the last year as he struggles to hit at the major-league level. His 134 strikeouts in 472 major league at-bats are particularly alarming.
