Boston’s bullpen and bats bury Birds

BOSTON — They’re not always going to be pretty.

But it doesn’t matter how a team earns a victory — the important thing is just to get the “W” at all costs. That was certainly the case for the Boston Red Sox yesterday as everyone on the field, in the dugout and out of the bullpen contributed in some small way en route to a 13-4 victory over the Baltimore Orioles during a four-hour marathon at Fenway Park.

A complete team effort is quickly becoming the theme for this season as manager Terry Francona has been using interchangeable parts in order to get the job done.

“There were a lot of key factors,” said Francona.

Alex Cora has been one of those key factors of late. Whether he’s been in the starting lineup or inserted late in a game, the veteran utility man has produced in the field and at the plate.

With the Sox holding a two-run lead in the seventh inning yesterday, the manager summoned Cora from the bench to pinch-hit for rookie Dustin Pedroia. Cora smoked a high chopper through the hole on the right side of the infield, driving in two runs.

Cora wasn’t the only key component yesterday as everyone in the starting lineup, with the exception of Pedroia, drove in a run during the 15-hit barrage.

“It was a good game and we put it together very nice,” said Red Sox slugger David Ortiz, who went 2-for-4 with one RBI. “Everybody is playing their best and playing well. That’s what it takes to win games.”

The Sox’ starting rotation has been solid all season, and when it hasn’t been, its bullpen has been there to pick up the pieces as it did again yesterday.

Starter Curt Schilling allowed four runs on nine hits with two walks and four strikeouts and surrendered a 4-1 lead in the fifth and sixth innings as the Orioles tied the game at 4-4. With one out and runners on second and third, Francona gave Schilling the hook and replaced him with lefty Javier Lopez, who was recalled from Pawtucket on Friday.

Lopez did his job and got back-to-back hitters to ground out to end the inning. He faced one more hitter in the seventh and recorded a strikeout. After Brendan Donnelly faced two hitters and allowed one hit, the Japanese sensation Hideki Okajima was brought in. The lefty worked 1 2/3 scoreless innings and allowed just one hit before Jonathan Papelbon finished the job in the ninth.

“It’s a 25-man roster of guys who know how to win,” said Schilling. “That’s huge. It just seems like it is a different somebody every night. But, it has been a consistent everybody in that bullpen all year long and that’s huge. I mean, in a league of these offenses, to have a bullpen this good is obviously a great thing.”

Offensively, the Red Sox exploded in the seventh and eighth innings, scoring eight runs on eight hits as Boston had its way with the Baltimore bullpen.

“We’re clicking right now,” said Red Sox outfielder J.D. Drew. “Everybody is chipping in a hit here and there with good at-bats with runners in scoring position. It’s all a big-team effort.”

With the way the wind was swirling around the storied ballpark yesterday, everyone knew, especially Drew, the hits had to come often in order to score runs. With two men on in the fourth inning, he just missed a three-run home run when his long drive got knocked down by the wind in right field, allowing Orioles outfielder Nick Markakis to catch the ball on the warning track.

“You can’t do it with just power, especially on a day like today,” said Drew. “It was one of those days when you kept looking at the clock and asking if this is for real. We had good at-bats and grinding them out will produce a long game.”

After Friday’s 6-3 loss to the Orioles in which the Red Sox could not come up with the timely hits, Boston was able to turn it around yesterday.

“Everybody is making strides,” said Red Sox captain Jason Varitek. “People who were struggling are making strides at being better, and some of the people that are doing well are being consistent.”
