FORT MYERS, Fla. — Bartolo Colon, who agreed to a contract with the Red Sox over the weekend, arrived at the team’s minor-league complex minutes after noon yesterday, and later played long-toss with pitching coach John Farrell.
Colon chose not to speak with the media yesterday. Presumably, he will do so today, with the help of an interpreter as Colon has never felt comfortable with his English.
He appeared heavyset, but was no bigger than he’s been in recent seasons. Colon hasn’t thrown since the first week of February and faces a lot of work to build up arm strength before getting to face hitters and, eventually, appearing in games.
Colon’s arrival was the most anticipated event of the day. When he pulled up in a maroon Mercedes, photographers immediately turned their attention from manager Terry Francona’s usual post-workout news conference to Colon.
Some 30 minutes or so later, Francona sought out Colon in the clubhouse, gave him a welcoming hug and then allowed Colon to get to work.
TV takes a look at stats man
The Sox worked on a number of fundamentals yesterday, including cut-off throws, relays and pop-up drills. Still to come: First-and-third defensive alignments and some throwing on the part of the outfielders. … A camera crew from 60 Minutes was at the complex yesterday, led by longtime CBS News correspondent Morley Safer, to produce a profile on Red Sox consultant Bill James. James is the acknowledged father of the Sabermetric movement in the game and in large part is responsible for the emphasis on statistical analysis that has changed the game.
