Boston Red Sox
Now it’s down to 25

FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Red Sox don’t have to file their 25-man roster for Opening Day until Sunday, but Boston officially finalized its squad yesterday, which included no surprises.
Boston pitcher Javier Lopez, shown pitching earlier this spring, landed one of the two remaining roster spots as the Red Sox set their roster for Opening Day.

Yesterday morning manager Terry Francona met with pitchers Bryan Corey, Manny Delcarmen and Craig Hansen and told them they would not break camp with the club tomorrow night. Corey was returned to minor-league camp while Hansen and Delcarmen were optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket.
Lefty Javier Lopez and Kyle Snyder, meanwhile, were told that they had made the Opening Day roster.
Six weeks ago, the Sox began camp with 24 spots spoken for and one spot in the bullpen unclaimed. That likely would have gone to Snyder, who was out of options and would have been exposed to waivers had the Sox tried to send him to the minor leagues.
When Mike Timlin suffered a setback with a strained oblique muscle and was ticketed for the disabled list at the start of the season, that opened a second — albeit temporary — spot that was awarded to Lopez.
“I felt good about myself from the start of camp,” said Snyder, who compiled a 2.53 ERA over six games, three of them starts. “This is as competitive a camp as I’ve ever been a part of and my main priority was just to pitch well.”
In part because he’s been stretched out earlier in the Grapefruit League schedule, Snyder will be used in long and middle relief, though he could eventually work his way into a set-up position.
“I can fill a number of different roles,” said Snyder. “I’ll do whatever they feel is best for the club. I’m just very proud to be a member of the Red Sox. I couldn’t be happier.”
Lopez, too, was buoyed by the news, having worried that the Sox wouldn’t have room for a third lefty reliever in addition to J.C. Romero and Hideki Okajima.
Lopez has added a changeup to his repertoire, which has made him tougher on right-handers. Previously considered someone who would come in lefty match-up situations, Lopez may now be used for full innings.
“You always want to shake that specialist label,” he said.
His stay may be short, since the Sox expect Timlin to be activated from the DL by the time they return home after the first road trip. But Lopez wasn’t concerning himself with any timetables yesterday.
“You hope it’s full-time,” said Lopez. “But I’ll take it for what it’s worth. If it’s for a week, great. If it’s for the full season, even better.”
Though Hansen had been mentioned as a potential closer candidate at the start of camp, the former St. John’s star was erratic and the feeling was he would benefit from getting regular work at Triple A to begin the season.
“I kind of had a feeling (about the news),” said Hansen. “I had my opportunity. I was just inconsistent with my outings, which hurt me.”
Hansen had a particularly rough appearance Monday in Sarasota against Cincinnati when he pitched two-thirds of an inning and allowed five runs on two hits, two walks and two hit batsmen.
Francona said Hansen wouldn’t close for Pawtucket.
“He doesn’t need to do that,” Francona said, “coming in and getting three outs in the ninth inning. That’s superficial. He needs to pitch as needed.”
Delcarmen was under consideration for the spot that went to Lopez, but the Sox felt his progress might be impeded by a brief two-series stay with the major-league club.
“We’ll let him get started (at Pawtucket) now so he doesn’t lose 10 days (of development),” said Francona.
The bullpen, in addition to Romero, Lopez and Snyder, will also include Jonathan Papelbon, Joel Pineiro and Brendan Donnelly.
