Braves’ Kotsay interests Sox

Trade talk over Mark Kotsay intensified last night between the Braves and Sox.

NEW YORK — The Red Sox and Atlanta Braves were getting closer late last night to a deal that would send outfielder Mark Kotsay to Boston.

The Red Sox placed outfielder J.D. Drew on the disabled list yesterday, retroactive to last week. He’s not eligible to come off the DL until Sept. 2. Additionally, the team has been relegated to playing journeyman Jeff Bailey in the outfield on occasion.

Kotsay is a left-handed hitter who could provide some depth off the bench. He hits right-handed pitching well (.283 in his career; .305 this season), is a veteran (12 major-league seasons) and has one of the best outfield throwing arms in the game.

In essence, Kotsay is a lesser version of Brian Giles, whom the Sox attempted to obtain earlier this month from San Diego. Giles, however, refused to waive his no-trade clause and the deal died.

Philadelphia, which recently lost outfielder Geoff Jenkins to an injury, is also said to have an interest in Kotsay, who is eligible for free agency at the end of this season. The Braves are said to be looking for a mid-level prospect in return for Kotsay. Indications late last night were that the Red Sox were prepared to give the Braves a young pitcher, though not one they highly value or project as much of a prospect.

The Red Sox’ interest in Kotsay may diminish by the end of the weekend, however, since players added to the roster after Sept. 1 aren’t eligible for postseason play.
