Mike Lowell’s torn labrum has prevented him from being much of a factor for the Sox in the playoffs. He will miss the rest of the postseason and have surgery on Monday.

BOSTON — Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell will have arthroscopic surgery Monday to repair a torn labrum in his right hip, and shave down a bone spur at the top of the femur. Lowell is done for the year, but should be back in time for spring training next year.

“If I get it now, with the doctor’s timetable, by mid-February everything should be totally good to go. So I think that lines me up well to have a full spring training and not be rushed and not have it affect next year,” Lowell said from the dugout last night.

Dr. Bryan Kelly, a hip specialist who works closely with the New York Giants, will perform the procedure in New York this weekend.

“He needs to have this done,” said manager Terry Francona. “There was no way he was going to be able to play.”

Lowell hasn’t played since Game Three of the Division Series against Anaheim, and was left off Boston’s League Championship Series roster due to the injury.

The hip is a ball-and-socket joint, where the femur rests in a cushion of cartilage known as the labrum. The labrum can rip from a direct injury or from repetitive motion, and causes pain and a decrease in range of motion.

In the ALDS, Lowell was having trouble moving in the field, and couldn’t easily reach outside pitches. The Red Sox shut him down after the third game, and he finished the postseason 0 for 8.

Several days after his last game, Lowell was still experiencing bruising and swelling, which was eventually tied to the combination of the labrum and the bone spur. “All the other times, two, three days, the swelling went down a lot. I didn’t take a hit or anything, so it was kind of coming from the inside out. The doc really didn’t like that too much,” Lowell said.

General manager Theo Epstein told Lowell that he would probably be left off the World Series roster regardless. With that in mind, Lowell opted for surgery as soon as possible.

“Theo actually told me there was a 99-percent chance I was not on the roster… I just didn’t want to drag it out and see the effects the later part of spring training or even April of next year,” Lowell said. “They told me they’ve cleared NFL players for full contact in four months, so I guess I’m banking on that,” Lowell said.

Lowell signed a three-year deal worth $37.5-million last winter after he was named the World Series MVP.

Lowell’s right hip has bothered him for most of the season, and he attempted to save himself at the end of the regular season for the playoffs. He finished the year batting .274 with 17 home runs and 74 RBI in 113 games.

Lowell will be released from the hospital the day after the surgery. He will likely be on crutches for several weeks, but expects to rejoin the team and cheer them on, if they make it to the next round.

“I’d like to be in the dugout here for Game One of the World Series –– as long as no foul balls come in,” he said.
