Lowell and Drew remain in limbo

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Terry Francona said after yesterday’s workout session that the team wasn’t prepared to make a final decision on the roster status of Mike Lowell or J.D. Drew.
“We’ll meet a little later at the hotel and talk with the guys,” said the Red Sox manager. Boston doesn’t have to submit its roster for the series until this morning.
Drew, who has played very little in the last six weeks because of a bad back, looked very good at the plate during the batting-practice session, sending several pitches deep into the right-field stands at Angel Stadium. He also took some balls in right field and didn’t seem to be bothered much.
Lowell, hampered by a painful right hip-flexor, hit several line drives and didn’t pull up lame at all during BP, but didn’t drive the ball anywhere near as well as Drew did. Lowell also took grounders at third base, where he moved somewhat gingerly.
General manager Theo Epstein and the team’s training staff watched every swing Lowell took. Neither Drew nor Lowell was available for comment after the workout.
When asked if the team had given any thought to playing David Ortiz at first base in order for Lowell to serve as DH, Francona said no.
“With the way the Angels play the game,” said Francona, referring to Anaheim’s fondness of small-ball tactics like the bunt and the stolen base, “that wouldn’t put our best team on the field.”
