Players put hostilities aside, focus on defeating Rays
07:12 AM EDT on Monday, June 30, 2008
HOUSTON — The Red Sox tonight begin a three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays, the first meeting between the two teams since they brawled at Fenway Park on June 5. Red Sox players surveyed yesterday didn’t believe there would be any renewal of hostilities.
“Our expectation is to win games,” said second baseman Dustin Pedroia. “We’re not thinking about settling scores. We’re going in there to win games.”
“Honestly, I’m not thinking about (what happened earlier this month),” said Jason Varitek. “I’m hoping that’s behind both teams.”
Coco Crisp, who was at the center of the brawl, will sit out the series as part of his five-game suspension.
