Quadriceps tear to sideline Lugo for a month

09:35 AM EDT on Sunday, July 13, 2008

Journal Sports Writer

BOSTON — Red Sox shortstop Julio Lugo will be out four to six weeks with a severe quadriceps tear. He suffered the injury in the bottom of the ninth inning against the Orioles on Friday night at Fenway Park. As a result, Jed Lowrie has been recalled from Pawtucket.

“It’s bad,” said Lugo. “It’s a tear. … It’s disappointing because this is the best I have felt since I’ve been here. It took me about a year and a half to start feeling comfortable. I thought I was getting my swing back. I felt good in the field and my body felt good, so when something like this happens, it’s disappointing.”

Lugo was attempting to beat out a base hit when he felt a “pop” and after he crossed the first-base bag. He was in obvious pain as he lay on the ground.

“I just knew it wasn’t good,” he said.

After the game, a team doctor told him it was a tear, but the shortstop didn’t believe it, so he had an MRI taken yesterday morning that confirmed the bad news.

Lugo was sporting a brace on his left leg yesterday. He met with medical staff last night to discuss the rehab process.

“I’ll be back for the playoffs,” he said. “At least I’ll be fresh for the World Series.”

As Lugo stood in the corner of the clubhouse, teammate and good friend David Ortiz spoke about the shortstop’s injury.

“It’s hard to see when your boy goes down like that,” said Ortiz. “I know he felt the same way when I went down. You can’t really control injuries. Nobody works harder than that guy.”

Lugo is hitting .268 with one homer and 22 RBI in 82 games. He’s made 16 errors, and has grounded into 13 double plays.

Crisp to sit

Red Sox center fielder Coco Crisp was out of the lineup for the second consecutive game with forearm soreness in both arms. Manager Terry Francona said Crisp was still tender. … Former Red Sox outfielder Bobby Kielty, who has spent the majority of the season with the PawSox, has asked for, and was granted, his release. … Red Sox outfielder J.D. Drew returned to the lineup last night after missing two games with a sore back. He wasted little time getting back in the swing of things, belting his 17th homer of the season, a solo shot with two outs in the bottom of the first inning.

Pan-Massachusetts Challenge

The 29th annual Pan-Massachusetts Challenge will take place Aug. 5 with more than 500 cyclists participating in a two-day 190-mile trek to raise money for cancer research at the Dana-Farber Institute. The Red Sox honored some of those riders in a pregame ceremony yesterday at Fenway Park, including three with Rhode Island connections.

Matthew Starring, 22, of Barrington, is battling leukemia and will not be able to ride because of a relapse. So his oncology nurse practitioner from Miriam Hospital, Andrea Schindler, of Cranston, will ride in his place.

Katie Horn, 20, of West Simsbury, Conn., and a student at Providence College, is a brain-tumor survivor. She will ride for the first time in the PMC.
