Matsuzaka to make rehab start for PawSox on Monday
07:18 AM EDT on Thursday, June 12, 2008
BOSTON — After an afternoon of deliberation, the Red Sox and Daisuke Matsuzaka determined that Matsuzaka will make a rehab start for the Pawtucket Red Sox Monday against Lehigh Valley.
Matsuzaka is eligible to leave the disabled list today, but the Sox want him to make one minor-league start before returning to Boston’s starting rotation.
Matsuzaka has been on the DL since May 28. He left the mound in the fourth inning of a start in Seattle, hampered by shoulder fatigue. After further examination and tests, it was determined that Matsuzaka was afflicted with a mild rotator cuff strain.
Matsuzaka threw in the bullpen yesterday afternoon under the supervision of pitching coach John Farrell. He’s scheduled to throw another side session tomorrow before joining the PawSox in Pennsylvania for Monday’s start.
Manager Terry Francona did not watch the session, but Farrell reported Dice-K had a very aggressive bullpen.
If Matsuzaka doesn’t have any further setbacks, it’s expected that he will start for the Sox on June 21, against the St. Louis Cardinals at Fenway.
