LAS VEGAS — Reports surfaced yesterday that the Red Sox are likely to land free-agent Mark Teixeira. Several media outlets reported Boston GM Theo Epstein has made it a priority this offseason to sign the slugging first baseman.

Epstein will not get specific when it comes to players, agents or teams he is in communication with, but he did say the offers he has out to free-agent players are in the preliminary stage. When asked if he has met with Teixeira’s agent, Scott Boras, Epstein said he didn’t want to get into specifics, but added the sides will talk before the end of the winter meetings.

The Yankees are attempting to land some big-name players this offseason, including Teixeira and pitchers CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett. New York GM Brian Cashman said he met with Teixeira last week, but an offer has not been made.

Where Teixeira ends up remains to be seen, but he did say he wanted a deal done before Christmas.

The winter meetings will end tomorrow with the Rule V draft. Epstein said he is interested in a few of the players available, but he’s not sure if his roster is set up to carry a Rule V guy. It’s also possible that the Red Sox could lose a few players in the draft. … Epstein was named Major League Baseball’s Executive of the Year by Baseball America. He was honored yesterday. … Former PawSox and Red Sox pitcher Phil Seibel is now working in the player-development department for Arizona. … The Red Sox’ performance-enhancement coach, Don Kalkstein, has left his position with the club. Epstein said he could be replaced down the road by Bob Tewksbury. Kalkstein will still be involved with the team in some capacity.
