Tampa Bay Rays say scuffles with Red Sox have been forgotten

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — There’s been plenty of bad blood between the Rays and Red Sox in the past, including a brawl this season.

But, echoing the Red Sox, all that’s in the past as far as Tampa Bay is concerned.

Rays manager Joe Maddon recalled his first game against the Red Sox in 2006, when he and Boston manager Terry Francona, along with league officials and umpires, spoke about the tensions and were given warnings before the first regular-season game that year.

Everything that has happened in the past is forgotten, according to Maddon.

“All that stuff doesn’t matter right now,” he said. “Regardless of what people want to write, or think, or project, it doesn’t matter. I know it’s not going to be on my mind, or my players’ minds. It won’t be on the Red Sox players’ minds. This is the American League Championship Series, and what has happened in the past won’t matter; it’s about winning [tomorrow night’s] game.

“I don’t think there’s any motivation necessary from any previous event that’s occurred,” he added. “I really don’t.”

As the Rays were preparing for their workout yesterday, ESPN was showing past scrums between the teams. Most of the Tampa players who watched were laughing, including pitcher James Shields, who was confronted by the Sox’ Coco Crisp during an incident in June.
