Bulls 10, PawSox 6: Buchholz has a rough time in Durham
09:04 AM EDT on Saturday, May 31, 2008
•HIGHLIGHTS: Clay Buchholz struggled with his control in his second rehab start with the PawSox. Of the 76 pitches he threw in four innings of work, 41 were strikes, and he walked four batters and issued a wild pitch. The Bulls touched Buchholz for three earned runs, including a two-run Dan Johnson homer that just made it inside the right-field foul pole. Buchholz did have five strikeouts, including striking out the side in his final inning of work. … The PawSox twice tied the game, at 3-3 and 5-5, but the bullpen was unable to hold the Bulls in check. Edgar Martinez (1-1) allowed five runs in two innings of work and took his first loss of the season. Dan and Elliot Johnson had 3 RBI apiece for Durham. … Chris Carter and Brandon Moss hit back-to-back home runs to lead off the 4th inning. For the evening, Carter was 2-for-3 with two RBI. … Bulls’ righthander Chris Mason turned in a quality start, allowing three runs and striking out seven in six innings of work, but Kurt Birkins (1-1) picked up the victory in relief. Dale Thayer pitched the final 1 1/3 innings for his seventh save of the year.
•KEY TO THE GAME: With one out and Justin Ruggiano on first in the bottom of the seventh, Joel Guzman put a 3-2 pitch through the right side of the infield. Ruggiano advanced to third and later scored on Reid Brignac’s sacrifice fly, and Elliot Johnson’s two-run homer one batter later provided the Bulls with crucial insurance runs.
•NOTES: Before the game, the PawSox lost their leadoff hitter and top offensive threat — at least temporarily. The Red Sox purchased the contract of Jeff Bailey yesterday afternoon to fill the roster spot vacated when Daisuke Matsuzaka was placed on the 15-day disabled list. Bailey was second in the International League in RBI (44), tied for third in home runs (16), and eighth in batting average (.318). Speculation is he will return to Pawtucket on Tuesday, when the Red Sox are expected to call up Justin Masterson to take Dice-K’s spot in the rotation. … Pawtucket added Bobby Kielty to the roster yesterday. He had been in Single-A Lancaster after coming off the PawSox disabled list Tuesday. Before going on the DL on April 19, Kielty was hitting .206 in 12 games with Pawtucket.
•UP NEXT: This evening, David Pauley (6-2, 3.09) is set to face off against Bulls right-hander Jeff Niemann (2-1, 1.71). Masterson was originally scheduled to start tonight but was moved up to Thursday in anticipation of his promotion to Boston. Pauley has won his last four starts and has allowed six earned runs in 22 1/3 innings pitched over that stretch.
