Yankees 9, PawSox 8: Kyle Snyder bombed after return from DL
07:18 AM EDT on Wednesday, May 28, 2008
•HIGHLIGHTS: Pawtucket starter Kyle Snyder was scheduled to throw 60-65 pitches in his first game back from the DL with a groin injury. The right-hander lasted only 1 2/3 innings. He allowed five runs on three hits with three walks and one strikeout. He also hit two batters and threw 54 pitches (26 strikes). … Scranton starter Dan Giese worked the first three innings without allowing a hit as the Yankees jumped out to an 8-0 lead. Pawtucket scored six runs on four hits in the bottom of the fourth inning off Giese. During that barrage, the PawSox’ Dusty Brown crushed a grand slam and Joe Thurston contributed a two-run homer.
•KEY OF THE GAME: The Yankees’ Ben Broussard went 3-for-4, including 3 doubles, 3 RBI, 3 runs scored. He began the season with the Texas Rangers and was released on May 15. He made his Yankees debut here last night in fine fashion. He doubled to lead off the sixth inning and scored what proved to be the game-winning run on Cody Ransom’s single.
•PLAYER TO WATCH: Since Pawtucket shortstop Jed Lowrie has been on the shelf with the wrist injury, Gil Velazquez has replaced him at shortstop and has done a phenomenal job defensively. The 28-year-old infielder signed with the Red Sox organization as a minor-league free agent last December. He had his six-game hitting streak snapped last night, but his glove work has been solid.
•QUOTES: “How ’bout that one tonight?” said PawSox manager Ron Johnson. “There was good and bad. The bad was we spotted them too many runs. The good part is, watching the way this club battles. If you could have been in the dugout — it was awesome. Even when we were down 8-0 and didn’t have a hit.”
•NOTES: Lowrie missed his 10th consecutive game last night with a left-wrist injury. Johnson said they don’t want to rush Lowrie back, but there’s a chance he could play this weekend in Durham. … Red Sox pitcher Clay Buchholz will make his second rehab start for the PawSox on Friday in Durham. … Fellow Red Sox pitching prospect Justin Masterson will make his Triple-A debut in Durham on Saturday for the PawSox. … Outfielder Bobby Kielty was activated from the seven-day DL and assigned to Single-A Lancaster to continue his rehab from hand surgery. He’s scheduled to play 2-3 games before rejoining the PawSox on the road next week. … Since Snyder was reinstated from the DL and pitched last night, Charlie Zink was transferred to the Lowell roster in a temporary paper move.
•UP NEXT: PawSox pitcher Devern Hansack (2-5, 5.55 ERA) will face the Yankees’ Kei Igawa (3-4, 3.83) at 7:05 tonight at McCoy Stadium. The teams close out the four-game set tomorrow with Pawtucket’s David Pauley (6-2, 3.09) going up against Scranton’s Dan McCutchen (0-1, 4.26).
