Knights 9, PawSox 3: Hansack can't keep ball in the park

•HIGHLIGHTS: It was a tale of the long ball early, small ball late and, ironically, some strong pitching during last night’s game at Knights Castle in Fort Mill, S.C. PawSox starter Devern Hansack, who has struggled in his last two starts, struck out six and scattered 10 hits in 6 1/3 innings. However, three of those hits were home runs — to Chris Getz in the second inning, a first-pitch shot by Fernando Cortez in the third, and a towering blast by Brad Eldred in the fourth. But Hansack, reliever Michael Tejera and Pawtucket fell apart in the bottom of the seventh, giving up six runs to put the Knights in control. Charlotte starter Tomo Ohka was just as effective, striking out seven and scattering seven hits in six innings. But he also gave up a pair of home runs — a leadoff shot to Jeff Bailey in the first, and to Keith Ginter in the sixth — and his wild pitch in the third inning allowed Jed Lowrie to score. However, Charlotte’s bullpen shut the PawSox down after that, with relievers Adam Russell (who got the win), Jason Childers and Matt Anderson giving up only two hits — ninth-inning singles to Dusty Brown and Chad Spann — over the final three innings.

•KEY TO THE GAME: The bottom of the seventh inning. Hansack loaded the bases on three singles, then game up a run off a wild pitch that put Charlotte ahead. A walk loaded the bases again and chased Hansack, but Tehera — making his first appearance since his callup from Lowell — gave up a pair of singles, a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly to drive in four more runs.

•THEY SAID IT: “It was two different games. For six innings, we played pretty good baseball. We came out strong and I thought we were going to put a bunch of numbers on the board. All of a sudden, the bats went cold. We played well for six innings, then just fell apart.” — PawSox manager Ron Johnson.

•NOTES: Tejera was promoted from Lowell, and the PawSox put pitcher Kyle Snyder on the disabled list with a groin strain and activated pitcher Lincoln Holdzkom off the DL. Holdzkom had been sidelined since May 17 with a right bicep strain.

•UP NEXT: Tonight, the PawSox’ Clay Buchholz (0-0, 4.50 ERA) will go up against Knights knuckleballer Charlie Haeger, who is 3-4 with a 4.89 ERA.
