Bulls 6, PawSox 0: Snyder, PawSox offense have nothing

HIGHLIGHTS: It was a tale of two starters in Durham, N.C. last night. The Bulls’ Jeremy Cummings (5-0), who began the season pitching in Taiwan, threw seven innings of shutout ball, striking out 11 and walking none. That effort allowed him to pick up his fifth consecutive victory and lower his ERA on the year to 0.84. Meanwhile, Pawtucket’s Kyle Snyder (1-3) didn’t make it out of the first inning. He retired one batter, walked three and allowed four runs before being removed from the game with what PawSox manager Ron Johnson said was a likely reaggravation of the groin injury that relegated Snyder to the disabled list May 16-27. … Perhaps the PawSox’ lone offensive highlight was Brandon Moss’ ninth-inning single, which extended his hitting streak to 11 games. … This was the final meeting of the year between the two teams, who split the season series, 4-4. Pawtucket leads the International League in hitting, but the Bulls shut the PawSox out three times.

KEY TO THE GAME: Durham’s first eight batters. Snyder allowed the first six men he faced to reach base, either via single or base on balls. After recording an out on a fielder’s choice, and with the bases still loaded, he went to a 3-1 count on Mike DiFelice before being removed from the game. Jon Switzer issued the fourth ball to DiFelice, but the walk was charged to Snyder, accounting for the Bulls’ fourth and final tally of the inning and giving them more than enough runs for the night.

THEY SAID IT: “[Snyder] said (the groin) didn’t bother him at all doing his side (work). But he got in a game situation, and all of a sudden when he started struggling a little bit with his command, he started trying to ramp up and do some things with his legs. That’s when he felt it. The last few pitches I was watching him, and it just didn’t look right again. So we’re going to err on the side of caution and we got him out of the game.” — PawSox manager Ron Johnson.

NOTES: Moss’ three-home run game Saturday night continued to pay dividends yesterday. Yesterday, Moss was named the International League Batter of the Week for May 26-June 1. Moss batted .400 with four home runs, nine RBI and an .867 slugging percentage during that time span. His three-home run night was the first for the PawSox since Izzy Alcantara did it in 2001. … Pawtucket’s loss, coupled with wins from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Syracuse, dropped the PawSox to third place in the International League North Division. They now trail the first-place Yankees by two games.

UP NEXT: Having completed the season series with Durham, the PawSox now head down I-85 for a four-game set with Charlotte beginning tonight. Devern Hansack (2-6, 5.62) is slated to start the series opener against Knights righty Tomo Ohka, who is 1-8 with a 5.46 ERA for the year.
