PawSox 4, IronPigs 2 -- Hull does the job in spot start

07:39 AM EDT on Tuesday, August 26, 2008

•THE HIGHLIGHTS: Eric Hull, making a spot start on short notice for Pawtucket, more than doubled his longest appearance of the year while striking out seven and not walking a batter in five innings. Hull worked out of trouble in a two-run second inning by starting a stretch in which he retired the last 10 batters he faced. Jeff Corsaletti’s two-out single to right field in the seventh inning broke a tie and drove in two runs. Josh Wilson had a two-run single in the fourth, tying the score.

•KEY TO THE GAME: All of the scoring came on two-out, bases-loaded hits. T.J. Bohn had one for Lehigh Valley in the second inning before Wilson and Corsaletti came through for the PawSox. “That’s what we’ve done throughout the year,” PawSox manager Ron Johnson said. “The guys did a nice job to get four RBI with two outs.”

•FILLING IN: When David Pauley, who shares the International League victories lead with 14, was called to Boston on Sunday, it left the PawSox in need of an emergency starting pitcher. Hull made his first start since 2006. With Bartolo Colon on a 60-pitch limit tonight, the PawSox were vulnerable for two games — and even beyond — if Lehigh Valley got to Hull early. “Hull did a fantastic job,” Johnson said. “It was a bullpen game. Two or three innings would have been OK, then run as many guys out there as we can. But at the same time, we had to be a little careful with Bartolo on a 60-pitch limit.” Hull gave the PawSox a boost and was ready to try a sixth inning when Johnson decided he had done enough. “I don’t think you can ask any more of him,” Johnson said. “He did a nice job of damage control.” Hull showed he still had something left after giving up four straight two-out hits in the second. “Any time you have an inning like that, your goal after that is to get back out there and give the team three or four good innings,” Hull said.

•UP NEXT: Colon (2-1, 1.59) pitches for the PawSox tonight (7:05) against lefty J.A. Happ (8-6, 3.31). The series concludes tomorrow, with Edgar Martinez (7-3, 4.02) pitching against Kris Benson (1-3, 4.15).
