•THE HIGHLIGHTS: Not many. David Ross hit a home run in his PawSox debut, and reliever Beau Vaughan allowed only one run (a Garrett Jones homer) in 3 2/3 innings.

•MAGIC NUMBER STILL ONE: The PawSox could have clinched their first playoff berth since 2003 with a win last night. Their magic number to seal a postseason bid remains at one.

•KEY TO THE GAME: Misses in the field and at the plate. Pawtucket had not committed an error in its previous six games but made three in the first three innings last night — a fielding miscue by second baseman Joe Thurston in the first, a throwing error by third baseman Gil Velazquez in the second, and a high throw by Thurston with two outs in the third that allowed Rochester’s first run to score. The Wings added three more runs before the inning was over.

The PawSox managed just five hits against right-hander Philip Humber, one of four New York Mets prospects acquired by the Minnesota Twins in the offseason for pitcher Johan Santana. Humber went the distance, walking none and striking out eight. He threw 118 pitches.

PawSox starter Edgar Martinez (7-3) allowed four runs in 3 1/3 innings.

•THEY SAID IT: “The guys are excited about (nearing a playoff berth),” PawSox manager Ron Johnson said. “There’s a lot of focus on it. Tonight wasn’t our night. ‘Humber’ was terrific. I knew he was going to be something special. The Twins know how to scout.”

•PROSPECT WATCH: Ross, who is expected to be promoted to Boston on Sept. 1 as a third catcher, went 2-for-4 in his first game with the PawSox. He was signed by Boston on Wednesday after being released by the Cincinnati Reds. He hit 17 homers for the Reds last season, and 21 in 2006.

•HOME SWEET HOME: The Red Wings improved to 41-24 at home, second-best in the I.L. behind Pawtucket’s 44-24 mark at McCoy Stadium. Rochester is 14-1 in its last 15 home games.

•NEXT GAME: The two-game series concludes in Rochester tonight at 7:05. PawSox RHP Michael Bowden (0-3, 3.21 ERA) will pitch against Rochester RHP Brian Bass. Bass was designated for assignment by the Minnesota Twins this week and accepted his demotion to Rochester. This will be his first Triple-A start.
