•KEYS TO THE GAME: Pawtucket starter David Pauley, tied with teammate Charlie Zink for the league lead in wins with 11, did not have his good stuff for the first time in a while. He was tagged for eight hits and five runs in only 3 1/3 innings (90 pitches), his shortest stint in 19 starts this season. The right-hander’s earned-run average jumped from 3.24, sixth-best in the league, to 3.55 as his record fell to 11-3. It was his first loss since May 3, snapping his nine-game winning streak . . . After the PawSox had chipped away, narrowing their deficit to 5-4 in the fifth, the Mud Hens scored twice in the sixth on a groundout by Timo Perez and single by Brent Clevlen, expanding their advantage to 7-4 en route to an 8-4 win and a split of the four-game set.
•HIGHLIGHTS: Pawtucket center fielder Jonathan Van Every stole a two-run homer from the Mud Hens’ Kody Kirkland in the third inning, drifting back to the fence toward right-center, timing his jump perfectly and going over the bleacher railing to haul in the high drive . . . Toledo’s Freddy Guzman went 1-for-2 with three walks, three runs scored and four stolen bases.
•THEY SAID IT: “You have to give (Pauley) a mulligan and turn the page on something like this. He has been phenomenal this year. He just had a bad day.” — Pawtucket manager Ron Johnson.
•NOTES: In a pregame ceremony, Pawtucket owner Ben Mondor, former PawSox manager and I.L. MVP (1964) Joe Morgan and Jim Rice, the last International League player to win the Triple Crown (1974) were inducted into the I.L.’s Hall of Fame as part of the league’s 125th season celebration. I.L. president Randy Mobley presented the trio with their Hall of Fame statues. Mobley also brought along the league’s traveling Hall of Fame exhibit for the fans to see. “It’s quite an honor, to say the least,” said Morgan. “This is the highest honor you could imagine and I appreciate it immensely,” said Mondor. “I’m in because of the Triple Crown. I can’t believe someone else hasn’t done it.” . . . The home run for Gil Velazquez was his fourth of the season and third in his last 12 games . . . Guzman’s four stolen bases boosted his total to 26, fifth-best in the I.L. . . . The PawSox managed only six hits, four for extra bases — Velazquez’s homer, triples by Jeff Corsaletti and Joe Thurston and a double by Sandy Medera. Thurston’s single in the eighth gave the PawSox a “cycle” of team hits, and Dusty Brown added a single in the ninth . . . Clevlen went 3-for-4, including his 17th homer, a solo shot in the ninth off Chris Smith.
•ON DECK: Pawtucket opens an eight-game road trip in Columbus tonight. Highly touted Michael Bowden, called up from Double-A Portland, will make his Triple-A debut tonight. He’ll face Garrett Mock (5-3, 3.28).
