PawSox 5, Chiefs 2 - Buchholz goes five strong to pick up win

•THE HIGHLIGHTS: Second baseman Joe Thurston rapped three hits and knocked in a pair, with a first-inning double and a fifth-inning single. That extended his hitting streak to four games, during which he is 10-for-18 with four RBI. The PawSox scored four in the third, also getting RBI singles from first baseman Jeff Bailey, DH Chris Carter and third baseman Keith Ginter. Starting pitcher Clay Buchholz (4-1) hurled five scoreless innings, giving up four hits, walking one and fanning three. Hunter Jones, the last of five PawSox’ hurlers, pitched a scoreless ninth to get his fourth save of the season. Pawtucket has now won 14 of its last 16 overall and nine of its last 10 on the road.

•KEY TO THE GAME: Bounce-back bats. Carter went 0-for-4 in a loss to Rochester on Sunday, as did Ginter. Bailey had just two hits in his last 26 at-bats.

•PROSPECT WATCH: Buchholz grinded his way through a wet, dank night to cool off the Chiefs’ bats. Of his 60 pitches, 37 were strikes. In his last four starts, he is 4-0 with a 0.40 ERA in 22 2/3 innings pitched with five walks and 22 strikeouts.

•AWARD WINNER: PawSox RHP Devern Hansack was named the I.L. pitcher of the week yesterday for the stretch from June 23-29. He won both of his starts without allowing a run and has tossed 23 straight scoreless innings. The franchise record is 27 2/3 innings, set by Rob Woodward in 1986.

•THE REHAB: Reliever Mike Timlin, on a rehab assignment from Boston while recovering from left-knee tendinitis, made his third one-inning appearance. Like the first two, it was a one-two-three affair, accomplished on a mere six pitches. “Honestly, I wasn’t throwing the ball well in Boston,” Timlin said. “That (injury) affected me more than I wanted to say.”

•THE QUOTE: “I was a little concerned about the conditions of the game,” Pawtucket manager Ron Johnson said of pulling Buchholz after five. “There’s no doubt in my mind Buck could have gone longer. But you get those delays (to fix the field). It was getting too wet out there.”
