PORTLAND, Maine — By all appearances, the sore left wrist of Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz appears to be fine.

And so does his timing, even though he was held hitless for the first time since beginning his minor-league rehabilitation stint nearly a week ago in Pawtucket.

Last night, in his second game with the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs, Ortiz went 0-for-4 (but reached on an error and scored) against Connecticut in what turned out to be a lopsided 18-6 win by the Defenders in front of a full house of 7,368 fans at Hadlock Field.

Ortiz wrapped up his night in the bottom of the seventh by grounding to first, and while he declined to comment afterward, he did reiterate during a pre-game press scrum that he is feeling well enough to rejoin the Sox.

“It’s good,” he said. “I feel good. I feel better everyday.”

Batting third in the Portland order, Ortiz struck out in his first at-bat.

Facing Connecticut righty Garrett Broshuis, the two battled to a full count before Broshuis fooled the slugger by coming inside with an 80-mph curveball.

Ortiz was up in the count, 2-0, then 3-1, before Broshuis fed him a slow changeup to make the count 3-2.

Ortiz fouled off Broshuis’ next two offerings before taking strike three, which hit the inside corner.

“We know he wants to swing the bat,” said Connecticut catcher Pablo Sandoval, who had Broshuis do just that.

Connecticut rolled up a 9-1 lead, which kept Ortiz on the bench for over an hour.

In his second at-bat, in the bottom of the fourth, Broshuis put Papi into a 1-2 hole. But Ortiz sliced the next offering down the first-base line, where it was booted by Adam Witter. The ball shot across to second baseman Dave Maroul, whose throw went to Broshuis covering first well ahead of Ortiz. But Broshuis dropped the toss for an error.

Ortiz later made it to third, then scored on a slow roller hit by Argenis Diaz that was bobbled by shortstop Kyle Haines.

Portland went on to score four more runs in that frame to close to within 9-6.

Ortiz came to the plate for the third time in the bottom of the fifth, which he led off.

Shifting Haines to the right side of second base, Ortiz chopped Broshuis’ 3-2 offering straight to him, and was retired easily on the sixth pitch of the at-bat.

Two innings later, Ortiz was done for the night, after first getting Connecticut reliever Adam Cowart in a 3-0 hole.

Ortiz has one more night in Portland, but he is already anticipating an imminent return to Boston.

“I’m going to go back home,” he said, “and start going back into the regular routine that I have and be with the team.”
