Ortiz’ knee ‘feels good’ after first full workout
01:00 AM EST on Saturday, February 23, 2008
FORT MYERS, Fla. — David Ortiz, who was excused from conditioning drills and tests Thursday so as to not ask too much too soon from his surgically repaired right knee, took part in all activities Friday and came through fine.
“It feels good,” said Ortiz, who had a torn meniscus repaired last November. “I just doing the work. It’s not 100 percent yet, but it’s getting there.”
Ortiz took hit and also fielded ground balls at first. Ortiz won’t be asked to play the position until June when interleague play takes the Sox to National League ballparks, but he said he did the fielding drills “to try and help [Kevin] Youkilis.”
Youkilis, who played errorless ball at the position and was rewarded with a Gold Glove last year, probably didn’t need much in the way of instruction from Ortiz. Ortiz admitted that he was there to provide comic relief as much as anything.
“I was talking (trash) to him,” said Ortiz, smiling. “You know how Youk is.”
