Saving Baldelli for the season, Sox hold him out of shuttle run

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Red Sox position players had their physicals and went through an on-field running test at the Player Development Complex Tuesday afternoon.

Every player participated in the shuttle run except Rocco Baldelli, Mark Kotsay and Mike Lowell. Kotsay and Lowell are rehabbing their back and hip, respectively. Don't be alarmed, however, that Baldelli did not run.

According to manager Terry Francona, the Sox have a program in place for the Rhode Island native, who suffers from a mitochondrial disorder, and they don't want to burn him out this spring.

"We spoke with Rocco today and basically asked him for his cooperation in what he does on the field," Francona said. "He's here to try to help us win games and not to be the leader in the run-down drill. We told him, as a guy who got some years under his belt, we want him to cooperate with us and not do something he shouldn't. This was not something we wanted him to do."

As always, Ortiz was amusing during the drills. Red Sox prospect Chris Carter, who arrived in camp in tremendous shape after working out on the beaches of Narragansett during the winter, probably had one of the best times on the shuttle run.

"I think he was the only one excited for it," joked Francona.
