Halladay's available, but will Red Sox bite?
10:08 PM EDT on Thursday, July 9, 2009
BOSTON — It’s no secret that the Toronto Blue Jays are shopping ace Roy Halladay.
The right-hander has waived his no-trade clause and has given Blue Jays management a list of teams he would agree to be traded to, and it includes the Red Sox, Yankees, Phillies and Mets. Halladay wants to pitch for a team that has a chance to win the World Series.
The Jays would be willing to trade him within the A.L. East.
Toronto is heavily scouting minor-league prospects from the aforementioned clubs. If the Red Sox do inquire about Halladay, the Blue Jays will ask for pitcher Clay Buchholz along with first baseman Lars Anderson and another top prospect.
Red Sox management prides itself on the organization’s home-grown talent and depth, making it a difficult decision whether to part with Buchholz in favor of the veteran Halladay.
There is the possibility of the Red Sox attempting to acquire Halladay to keep him away from the Yankees, and vice versa.
A trade is likely but is not imminent.
