Mike Hazen, the Red Sox director of player development, said the team is on the verge of signing several minor-league free agents."We're [close with] a couple guys," Hazen said.
Hazen said the team has identified areas it is hoping to shore up at the top of its farm system.
"We're working to bring in a couple more pitchers and a couple middle infielders," Hazen said.
Boston has signed first baseman Paul McAnulty and reliever Marcus McBeth to minor-league deals so far this offseason, and re-signed third-baseman Gil Velasquez, who made an appearance on the major-league roster during the playoffs as a replacement for Mike Lowell.
McAnulty was with San Diego for much of last year, and McBeth finished the year with Pawtucket after he was picked up off waivers in August.
