BOSTON -- Gil Velazquez wrapped up a whirlwind few days by making his improbable major-league debut last night.

In order to add even more depth to the infield this weekend, the Red Sox purchased the contract of Velazquez from Pawtucket yesterday.

The 28-year-old infielder spent the season with the PawSox, and the last 11 seasons in the minors, mostly in the Mets and Twins organizations.

After Alex Cora was plunked on the hip by a pitch in the sixth inning, Velazquez came in to run and stayed in the game at shortstop.

“It’s the first time I’ve been called up in 10 ½ years, and I didn’t expect anything like this,” Velazquez said.

Velazquez was working out in Fort Myers, Fla., when the Sox decided they needed some defensive protection at shortstop.

“If there’s ever a need down the road, he won’t be coming from instructional league. He will be in this atmosphere and hopefully make some of the butterflies [go away]. We’re just trying to cover ourselves,” said Francona.

Velazquez hit .260 with 10 homers and 46 RBI for the PawSox this season. He played shortstop, second base, first base, third base and left field. He became Pawtucket’s everyday shortstop when Jed Lowrie was promoted to Boston on July 12.

“It went good,” Velazquez of his season in Pawtucket. “I think I started off slow and wasn’t too much. I felt like I played pretty good when I started playing consistently. Overall, for the year, it’s the best season I’ve had.”
