Drew has a good day as he works to get back on the field
08:18 AM EDT on Wednesday, September 24, 2008
BOSTON -- Outfielder J.D. Drew was able to take batting practice on the field yesterday afternoon. Drew, who has been bothered by a herniated disk for more than a month, was hitting the ball with authority and showed no ill effects.
The left-handed hitter was turning on the ball and driving it to right field with ease. After hitting with the first group, he shagged balls in the outfield.
Manager Terry Francona said prior to BP that yesterday was the most “encouraging day in a while” for Drew. The hope is he’ll be able to return prior to Sunday’s season finale and be ready for the postseason.
Mike Lowell (hip) hit in the cage yesterday and is scheduled to take BP on the field today.
