Pedroia's steal gives Red Sox their highest total in 91 years
06:18 PM EDT on Sunday, September 21, 2008
TORONTO -- Dustin Pedroia on Sunday drilled his 52nd double of the season -- he leads the major leagues in that category -- in the eighth inning, then swiped third base.
Pedroia is now 19 for 20 in stolen bases, and if he can steal one more in the final week, would give the Red Sox three players with 20 or more steals for the first time since 1914, when Tris Speaker had 42, Hal Janvrin had 29 and Duffy Lewis had 22.
Jacoby Ellsbury has 49 steals and Coco Crisp has 20.
Pedroia's steal also gave the Sox 117 for the season, the most by a Red Sox team since 1917.
His 205 hits this season are the most for a major-league second baseman since Mark Loretta had 208 for the 2004 San Diego Padres.
