Youkilis' sore back continues to keep him out of lineup
07:54 AM EDT on Thursday, September 4, 2008
BOSTON -- Red Sox first baseman Kevin Youkilis was out of the lineup again yesterday with a stiff back. When asked how Youkilis was feeling yesterday morning, manager Terry Francona said, “Not as good as we hoped.”
“He’s here but he’s not going to play,” said Francona.
Francona said Youkilis first felt the discomfort during Monday’s game.
In Youkilis’ absence, Red Sox newcomer and outfielder Mark Kotsay started at first yesterday.
An outfielder by trade, Kotsay hasn’t played the corner position since September of 2006 while with the Athletics, but Francona said he was impressed with how well the outfielder can move.
Kotsay turned a crucial, and possibly, game-saving double play in the top of the eighth inning. Offensively, he provided a two-run triple to tie the game at 4-4 before Boston won it in the bottom of the ninth.
