Red Sox celebrate Rhode Island Day at Fenway
07:28 AM EDT on Monday, August 4, 2008
BOSTON -- The State of Rhode Island was well represented yesterday at Fenway Park. Each of the six New England states is given its own day here, and yesterday was Rhode Island Day.
Governor Carcieri was on hand, along with Rhode Island native and Red Sox senior adviser Jeremy Kapstein. Kayla McCoombs, 14, of Coventry threw out the ceremonial first pitch, and Cranston native Patrick Davey sang the national anthem. The Rhode Island State Police Honor Guard presented the colors. Newly crowned R.I. governor of Red Sox Nation Ted Schmidt of Saunderstown was introduced during the pregame ceremony, and Kelley Lennon of Cumberland sang “God Bless America” in the seventh inning.
“Rhode Islanders are big Red Sox fans,” said Carcieri. “We are a big part of Red Sox Nation. We may be small, but we are passionate about our sports. It’s exciting. This is such a wonderful tradition.”
